Alloyed heat-treatable steels

DIN EN 10083-1, -2 and -3 / ISO 683-2

This category is generally comprised of steels with a carbon content of approx. 0.20% to 0.70%, ensuring that these materials possess a high degree of hardenability. Strong mechanical properties in conjunction with sufficient softness values are achieved only through subsequent quenching and tempering. In these steels, the properties must remain consistent across the entire cross-section of the component. For this reason, the aim is to harden the material through to the core. If a component is a complex shape, it is essential to cool the material slowly after quenching and tempering to ensure that the workpiece does not crack or warp. Alloyed heat-treatable steels are less susceptible to these kinds of issues than their non-alloyed counterparts.

Hardened materials are ideal for machine components such as crankshafts, con rods, bolts, screws and axles.

One of the special steels in our range is the pre-quenched and tempered variety 42CrMo4+QT. As long as the material is not exposed to heat during processing, this steel requires no subsequent quenching and tempering.
